PARENT/CAREGIVER NEWSLETTER

Kia Ora Everyone,

I hope that you are all managing to stay warm in the recent weather. I also hope that you have all received the answers you were hoping for with the recent land status details from the quakes.

CONTACT DETAILS – Can all parents and caregivers please ensure that we have your current contact details. This also includes an email address if you have one. It is vital that we have this information. Please look carefully also at your Emergency Contact people. In case of another emergency these would be the people that we will contact if we can’t get you; and are the people we will release your child to if you can’t get here. Consequently who you choose to be your emergency contacts is really important. We have included a form with this newsletter to be completed and returned. Please remember to update us immediately if this changes at any stage.

DONATION – Mary Moodie BOT have decided that it is necessary to implement a donation scheme for the centre. This was not an easy decision and the BOT have kept the figure as low as possible. They have decided on an annual figure of $120 per client. This can be paid by instalments or in a lump sum. This fee is necessary to cover the costs of outings/holiday programmes for the clients. Without this donation, we may not be able to continue with these. Please see the attached form and return with your payment as appropriate. Thank you!

CLOTHING - Please ensure that you send a detailed list of clothing items for each stay. We have recently had clients arriving with unnamed clothing, and no list. When a client arrives without a list or with unnamed clothing this is an added pressure to the staff as they are taken ‘off the floor’ to write lists and name clothing. If your child arrives without a detailed clothing list or unnamed clothing, MMRCC takes no responsibility for lost items.

CARER SUPPORT – Please send a signed Carer support form each time your child attends the centre. Some accounts are becoming quite large. It is important they are signed in the correct place: Box 1) “Payment direct to the support carer”. Please sign on the line marked: “Signature of full-time carer”. We have an example on the wall by the sign in sheet if you are not sure. If you are going to date the form it needs to be the end date of your child’s stay but we can do this for you.

STAFFING - It is with sadness that we farewell some long standing staff at the end of the holidays. Kimberley and Jo are both moving onto full-time work now that they have finished their studies. We wish them both well, and hope that they will come and visit us! We would like to welcome Jennifer, Shelley and Alice to the team. We are in the process of hiring and training new staff.

SERVICE - Just a reminder to parents/caregivers that we provide respite care service. We are not funded or trained to run education programmes for our clients. Where children possess behaviour management programmes we will do our best to follow them in the context of our service. If you have concerns about your child’s learning programme please speak to the educational staff that work with them.

AGE LIMIT – After recent discussion and advisement from the Ministry of Health, the Board has implemented a cut off age for the centre. Clients must exit the service by the end of their 21st year (as per school).

Ministry of Health Audit - The centre recently underwent an audit on our policies and procedures by the MOH. The results were excellent, and the MOH have passed on feedback stating that that they were extremely impressed with the results and the support that is provided to the families access the centre.

INFORMATION UPDATES - If your child has recently had a change in behaviour, medication or information relating to their day to day care, please let us know. It is essential that we have this information to provide the best support.

MUTUAL RESPECT - Please remember to treat people the way that you wish to be treated yourself. Consideration and empathy are important in CHCH at this time when everyone has frayed nerves. Mary Moodie staff work hard to provide a service for your child and your family. Verbally threatening or abusive behaviour is unfair and upsetting and will not be tolerated. Such complaints will be dealt with by the BOT.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES - We wish to farewell our Chairperson, Donna Burt from the Board, and wish her well in her future endeavours. Fleur Abrahamson is currently in role of Acting Chairperson and the board welcomes Donna Kemp onto the board as Treasurer.

FACEBOOK – Please join us on Facebook. We are posting details of activities, and pictures of the clients on activities. Another way to stay in touch with what is going on at the centre.

Keep safe and warm everyone.

Please look carefully also at your Emergency Contact people In case of another emergency these would be the people that we will contact if we can’t get you; and are the people we will release your child to if you can’t get here. Consequently who you choose to be your emergency contacts is really important.

Donation - The BOT has recently decided that it is unfortunately necessary to implement a new donation scheme for the centre. They have decided on an annual figure of $120 per client. This can be paid by instalments or in a lump sum. This will help to cover the costs of outing for the clients.

Staffing - MMRCC are making some changes to the way we run our shifts. We are now only having the Team Leader on the night shift sleeping over. The support staff will be working until 10pm. The day shift begins at 7.45am. This change will be monitored and reviewed by myself and the BOT over the next few months.

Carer Support Forms - Can parents/caregivers please ensure that a signed Carer Support form arrives at Mary Moodie for your child’s stay. Thank you so much to those who do this already.

Our new BOT consist of Donna Burt – Chairperson, Dave Williams, Treasurer, Fleur Abrahamson, Secretary, Sandra Williams and Nigel McDougall.

Certification Audit - The centre undertook a complete audit with Verification NZ in October 2010. This covers all the Health and Disability sector standards. We obtained the highest level of certification as an outcome of this audit. I would like to thank the parents/caregivers that took part in this process.

School Holiday Bookings - We currently have vacancies for the 2nd week of the school holidays. This is open to our clients under 16 years of age only at this time.

Clothing – Can all parents/caregivers please remember to include a detailed list of clothing your child brings for each stay. MMRCC will take no responsibility for misplaced items if a list is not included. Please ensure ALL clothing is clearly named.

Farewells - Unfortunately we have had several families and clients move on from our service over the last few months. Goodbye to James K, Courtney, Ben, Zoe and Daniel.

We will miss you all, and wish you the best for your future endeavours.

Keep warm and safe everyone.
